  • TANZANIA SECONDARY BASIC MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM

  • 1. Introduction

  • This Basic Mathematics course is for Form I - IV secondary school students. It is a revised version of the syllabus issued in 1988 and has been designed to be covered in four years.

  •  This revision is the result of evaluation and surveys done on the teaching of Basic Mathematics in secondary schools conducted from 1981 to 1995 by the Tanzania Institute of Education in collaboration with other institutions. The revised content and design has also taken care of many seminar recommendations on the teaching of mathematics given by teachers, inspectors and other mathematics experts from 1981 to 1995. The changes made are intended not only to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics and to achieve the national goals of education but also to make mathematics more relevant to the country scientific, technological and social development aspirations.

A high school math teacher brings an intensive collaboration model from O-level to A-level

While he teaches high school math on Long Island, Derek Pope brings lessons learned from Japan into his classroom every day.

Pope, who took a two-week trip to focus on how Japanese teachers engage in lesson study—an intensive structure for teaching collaboration that includes planning, observation, and critiques, admits he was initially skeptical that the demanding time requirements of the model made sense for him and his colleagues. But the trip, sponsored by the Knowles Science Teaching Foundation (KSTF) and his school district, opened his eyes.

  1. The Mathematics programmes is most effective when this sequence is followed: Initial Assessment = > Study Plan => Practice = > Video Lesson = > Worksheets
